Classic and Modern

A Complete Year of High School English

The Classic and Modern series blends quality literature, critical thinking, writing, and creative projects. Each of the four sections functions as a stand-alone class, but together they form a full year of high school English. Classes meet once a week on Outschool for 50 minutes, with engaging discussions and direct instruction. Detailed weekly assignments deepen understanding and support academic growth.

While labeled as English 1 or 2, these classes are a great fit for a range of high school students, including older learners who prefer a flexible, literature-rich approach. Honors options and formal grading are available for those who want an additional challenge or credit that's hands off for parents.

Classic & Modern 1: Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar

Shakespeare that sticks — not just checks a box.
In this engaging high school English unit, students explore Julius Caesar through a modern side-by-side translation that makes the language accessible while preserving the original text. Each week, students build critical reading and writing skills as they analyze themes of power, persuasion, and loyalty. With a hands-on campaign project, learners connect Shakespeare’s rhetoric to real-world communication — deepening both understanding and relevance. Ideal for students who want to move beyond memorizing quotes to truly engaging with the text. Honors option available.

Classic & Modern, Section 2

Literature that connects — and writing that builds confidence.
This 8-week course invites high school students to explore powerful themes through both classic and contemporary texts. With works like A Christmas Carol and It’s Trevor Noah, learners will sharpen their reading and writing skills while engaging in meaningful reflection and analysis. A formal narrative essay helps students develop storytelling techniques and personal voice—excellent preparation for future college application essays. A creative project adds space for expression and critical thinking. Ideal for homeschoolers seeking high-quality literature, guided writing instruction, and flexible assignments. Honors option available.

Classic & Modern, Section 3

Stories that spark insight—and projects that make it personal.
In this 8-week course, high school students will examine powerful themes of identity, voice, and belonging through both classic and contemporary texts. With featured works like The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and Gloria Buenrostro Is Not My Girlfriend by Brandon Hoàng, learners will sharpen their literary analysis skills while connecting with characters and ideas that feel relevant and real.

Creative, hands-on projects—like designing an app to bridge social divides or writing a podcast-style character interview—invite students to explore literature in fresh, thoughtful ways. Discussions, writing assignments, and weekly checklists provide just the right balance of structure and flexibility. Ideal for homeschoolers who want rich literary conversation, creative expression, and meaningful academic growth. Honors option available.

Classic & Modern, Section 4

Literature that challenges—and writing that makes an impact.
In this 8-week course, high school students explore classic poetry, compelling fiction, and high-interest graphic novels to examine themes of challenging norms, finding one’s voice, and expressing ideas clearly. With texts like Between Shades of Gray, Sunshine, Faint of Heart, and “The Pedestrian,” students engage with powerful stories that inspire critical thinking and meaningful conversation.
